Allensworth May Festival

May 18 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Allensworth, the first town in California established exclusively by African Americans, was founded in 1908 by a group of men led by Colonel Allen Allensworth. Born a slave in Louisville, Kentucky in 1842, Allensworth became the highest ranking black officer in the U.S. Army when he retired in 1906. One of his goals was to identify a town-site in the state of California where African Americans might start a new life together outside the restrictions of the Jim Crow South.

This Friends of Allensworth (FOA) event provides a great family festival atmosphere with entertainment, tours of historic buildings, food and music with special activities for children. There will even be horse and buggy rides!
